Whitehall Office Space

Renting office space on and near Whitehall is choosing to position alongside numerous government departments and ministries in an area of tremendous significance to the United Kingdom.

Running through the City of Westminster from Trafalgar Square towards Chelsea, it is just 0.4 miles (0.64 km) long yet passes several government buildings, including the old War Office building, Horse Guards, the Ministry of Defence, the Cabinet Office, and the Department of Health, ending at the Cenotaph – the war memorial laid out in 1920 to those of Britain and the British Empire of the First World War, and rededicated in 1946 to include those of the Second World War, and since coming to represent the Commonwealth casualties from those and subsequent conflicts.

Whitehall is also the location of several other memorials, including The Royal Tank Regiment Memorial, The Gurkha Memorial, and the memorial to The Women of World War II.

The Palace of Whitehall, the largest palace in Europe with more than 1,500 rooms, was the residence of Kings Henry VIII through William III before it was destroyed by fire in 1698. Only the Banqueting House survives today.

The name Whitehall was used in the Tudor period for buildings made of light stone or as a general term for any festival building, such as those that made up White City in West London. Today, it is used as a metonym for the British civil service and government and as the geographic name for the surrounding area.

The 200-metre cul-de-sac that is Downing Street branches off the south-west end of Whitehall, just above Parliament Street. The street is named after Sir George Downing, who built a row of houses along the street in the late 17th century and has held the official residences of the Prime Minister and the Chancellor of the Exchequer for over 300 years. The road has been closed to the public since 1990 following several terrorist attacks. The door of No. 10 Downing Street, the residence of the Prime Minister, cannot be opened from outside and is always opened by someone, usually a police officer, inside the property.

Scotland Yard is also located off Whitehall. Before the 17th century, Scottish kings and ambassadors would stay at a palace simply named ‘Scotland’ when visiting London. However, when Scotland and England became united through Charles I in 1603, the palace was largely demolished, and by the 18th century, it was completely gone, leaving the surrounding streets of Great Scotland Yard, Middle Scotland Yard, and The Lower Scotland Yard.

When the Metropolitan Police force was established in 1829, it moved into a building on the site, which became known as Scotland Yard. In 1890, when the force moved to another site close by, it took the name with it and named the premises New Scotland Yard.

The London Underground station of Charing Cross serves the north end of Whitehall, and Westminster Underground Station serves the south.

Members of parliament and those who work in parliament receive a parliamentary pass, which provides access to an exclusive underground and weatherproof tunnel that leads directly from Westminster station to the Palace of Westminster. This building, which dates back to 1016 (and was rebuilt in 1840 following a fire), is also known as the Houses of Parliament. It is the home of the House of Commons and the House of Lords legislative chambers.

Businesses and organisations can rent office space in Whitehall on traditional leasehold terms or choose flexible office space and workspace options from a range of premium office providers and workspace operators.

These options include private serviced offices, managed offices and co-working spaces that offer state-of-the-art amenities and first-class services.

These options offer all-inclusive pricing, so the rent includes utilities, secure enterprise-grade IT, cleaning, furnishings, meeting room use and other services such as reception, business support and concierge services.

The offices, which will accommodate teams requiring space for between 2 and 50+ people, are held by way of short-term licences rather than long-term commitment leases, which makes the spaces perfect for projects and other works that require offices on a temporary basis but come with the provision of options to extend terms.
